FNH is a GOOD care home

Folkestone Nursing Home is a privately owned ‘care home’. People in care homes receive accommodation and nursing and/or personal care as a single package under one contractual agreement dependent on their registration with us. Folkestone Nursing Home is a care home with nursing care. CQC regulates both the premises and the care provided, and both were looked at during this inspection. People were supported to have maximum choice and control of their lives and staff supported them in the least restrictive way possible and in their best interests; the policies and systems in the service supported this practice. People’s communication needs were met. Care plans were detailed, personalised and included people’s preferences. Staff understood how to provide a personalised care service. People were offered a variety of activities. Complaints were dealt with appropriately. People were offered a variety of activities. People’s end of life care wishes were met. FNH promote a positive culture within the service to achieve good outcomes for people. Managers and staff understood what was expected of them. FNH checked the quality of the service provided in order to make improvements. People, relatives and staff gave feedback on service quality through surveys and meetings. FNH worked with other professionals to improve outcomes for people.

Who runs Folkestone Nursing Home?

Our Registered Manager is MR DILIP MAHADEO, who has been a registered manager with CQC for the last 13 years for another service. Dilip has a wealth of experience in running a care home and is always focused at providing a person centered approach of care to his service users. "We aim to provide a safe and enjoyable environment for elderly people who are no longer able to manage in their own homes. There is an emphasis on providing a quality of life that enables residents to retain their independence, identity and a sense of their own value’. At Folkestone Nursing Home we place a lot of emphasis on team building, staff training and personal development. We have kind, caring staff who know all the residents well and our small size promotes a real family feel in the home. We believe this is one of our real strengths and why our residents love being with us. If you come for a visit, it’s very likely that you will find our staff spending time with the residents, engaging with them and listening to their stories"

Our residents charter

Review of care plans

Care plans are written specifically to communicate the individual care needs of each resident. We strongly believe that residents have the right to expect that we will discuss and agree their care plans with them. Where a resident is not able to express a view, we invite their family or representative to discuss and agree the plans with us-always taking into account the need for confidentiality. We will review care plans every month, and invite residents/ representatives to view the care at least every six months. Residents supported by Social Services will have a review annually with their Care Manager, and the home will be pleased to host participate in these reviews.

FOOD & LIFESTYLE AT FOLKESTONE NURSING HOME.

Every resident is asked to complete an about me booklet. We believe everyone deserves a nourishing meal with variety and choice. So we ask residents and their families to complete a lifestyle survey. This helps us cater to every taste, dietary, cultural preference and medical needs including malnutrition, dementia and diabetes. Everyone is different, so a lifestyle survey gives us a better insight into their hobbies, likes and dislikes and what they are capable of doing to try and give them more activity involved with social activities.

social activities and leisure interests

Residents are encouraged to pursue hobbies and leisure interests of their choice. The home has lively activities sessions most afternoons including music appreciation, exercise sessions, art, reading, and various games. Individual needs and wishes are identified in care plans, taking into account the resident’s abilities, and will arrange one-to-one activity sessions according to need. Trips to local shops and places of interest are regularly organized, and outings further afield are made periodically. We welcome families and friends and coming to take residents out, but must of course first conduct a risk assessment to assure the safety of both resident and visitor.

religious services

We will endeavour to enable residents to attend services or receive visiting clergy at Folkestone Nursing Home as they wish. These wishes are recorded in the resident’s individual care plans. A visiting clergyman holds monthly communication in the home for residents who wish to attend. If residents need to be accompanied to services outside the home, prior arrangements must be made to avoid the Home’s staffing being depleted! Details of places of worship for various denominations can be obtained from the reception.

Visiting times

Folkestone Nursing Home operates an open visiting policy with no restrictions. All visitors are requested to sign the visitor’s book when they arrive, and record the times of entering and leaving the home. This is to ensure the staff knows who is on the premises, particularly important in the event of fire alarm sounding. It is preferred that mealtimes are avoided to ‘protect’ the mealtime experience of the residents. Much research has been done on the benefits of ‘protected’ mealtimes and found to be of a health benefit to older people in nursing homes. Visitors are welcome to join their relatives for meals providing sufficient notice is given. We do make a small charge for this service. We will always make arrangements for residents to receive their visitors in private should they so wish, whether in their own rooms or in an office or communal area.

Your comments or concerns

The staff at Folkestone Nursing Home does their utmost to ensure that our care, services, attention and courtesy provided to residents, and their families and friends, meet the highest standards at all times. We invite feedback on our care and services; please let our staff know any comments you may wish to make. We recognise that concerns do occasionally arise, and welcome them being brought to our attention at the earliest possible opportunity. Please discuss any concerns you may have with a member of staff as soon as possible. If the member of staff is unable to address your concerns immediately, he/she will bring the concerns to a more senior member of staff who can take the necessary action.
